In 2023, the race to offer satellite-based communication features took place. One year after the feature is still immature or somewhat in beta stage. Satellite communication is not available in most countries yet. But in China, it’s getting widely adopted thanks to smartphone manufacturers like Huawei and Xiaomi. Huawei done some actual work on satellite connectivity feature on Huawei Mate 60 Series. Xiaomi just started working on it.
Xiaomi introduced satellite communication
With the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, Xiaomi introduced emergency satellite communication. Xiaomi is using Tiantong, China’s first mobile communications satellite system. Currently, it’s exclusively for China and might be available for overseas users later.
Xiaomi Satellite connectivity features
As like Huawei P60 Series, Xiaomi satellite connectivity supports both text messaging and audio calls. The two-way communication helps people get connected to the emergency service provider and update about the situation.
As reported by the source, it took 28 sec to establish the connection with the emergency satellite. After that the speed of sending messages was fast. Also the satellite call quality was reported to be high quality.
Satellite Connection Going Mainstream
It’s good to see Xiaomi adopting this new technology. Google also working on adding satellite communication as a native feature of Google Messages for supported devices. Not only that, AOSP developers also added satellite communication feature in Android 14 so that OEMs can easily implement it on their phones.
